My Move…an optional blog!

By optional I mean, you don’t have to read if you don’t want, and seriously I’m not offended if you skip it.  I do suppose, though, ALL blogs are optional.  I mean, if you don’t want to read it you’ve made your decision and moved on already and are not reading anymore, so why am I addressing those who don’t want to read since by now I’m SURE they are gone!?!  (Is this kinda getting like “The Monster At the End of This Book” (remember that one as kids???)…ok, really I digress….

So, all of my Rockstar friends know I moved this past weekend.  We are finally getting settled in and the house is getting unpacked to some extent.  The living room is done, the master bedroom is done, the kitchen is about 60% done, and the 2nd bedroom hasn’t even begun to look like anything that resembles anything except a storage unit!

Renee’ & I are not typically procrastinators, I mean, no more than anybody else anyway.  Well, we also had a TON more to pack up than I think we realized.  Anyway, we might have been ready to move (and been fully packed) but March 1st!!!  Problem is we moved November 30th!!! HAHA.  Well, 9am was “moving time” and we had some friends coming over to help.  We were mostly packed by then, but still had some odds and ends to get done.  We got everything packed up and out pretty quickly.  It took about 3 hours, which at the very end of (last 5 minutes) it began to rain a bit…it was good that by then we literally had the vaccum to pack up.

Well, we were moving 47 miles North into New Hampshire and with that it gets a little colder, so when we get to the new house, the light rain had turned into snow flurries (WELCOME TO NEW HAMPSHIRE!!!)….hahaha

Anyway, in the snow, not much accumulation, we got all of the house filled up (waaaay filled up).  It’s weird, this place is bigger, but we couldn’t seem to fit all of our stuff in the place!!!  HAHA….it just took some getting used to cause the set-ups of the rooms are different so we had to shift some furniture a bit differently than we had planned.

Now everybody is gone, and it was time to begin to unpack.  For anybody that’s moved, I’m sure you know what I mean but it is WAY overwhelming!!!  You just get though an almost sleepless night, a brutal day of lifting, bending, twisting, and carrying and then you have to do it all in reverse.  The first night we didn’t get much accomplished.  We did plug in the TV and had some basic cable stations so that was nice.  We got to relax a bit and just take a breath.  The second day all we did was unpack, hang up pictures, move the couches to how we wanted them, find our clothes, bath towels, and so on.  By the 3rd day we were finally able to have a home cooked meal, and now we are getting used to it all, and still getting it all unpacked.

We did board Salem (our kitten) for the moving day, but got him back on Monday (the first full day at home).  He took to the new place very nicely.  We kept him in the master bedroom with us for the first few hours of being home.  Just to get him a bit settled and used to it.  Then we let him roam around and since then he’s been doing GREAT!  He has lots of new hiding places, and lots of new things to explore.  There are cabinets in our kitchen that don’t go all the way to the ceiling…the kind you can put stuff on top of, anyway he climbs up there somehow and gets stuck…this is not so fun for us, but he seems to love it up there.  I just don’t want him to get hurt by falling off!

Anyway, all in all the move went well, I cut my finger on a glass door of a curio cabinet (spelling?), but that was the only injury.  There is a small tear on the back of one of our couches, and one of our mattresses got a little dirty from the truck, but overall there were no casualties from the move.  My back and arms were a bit sore, but I’m getting over it quickly.  I’m happy to be back here and  now that we’re settled I’m happy to be getting back to a better routine all around…food, exercise, and the big goal…Weight-Loss!

Some People Make Me SICK!!!

So I’m watching my local news tonight and they always have a spot for “National News”, I’m sure that most everybody here has the same thing on their local news broadcasts too, so maybe some of you saw this sad, sick, unfortunate story.  For those of you who are parents, I’ll warn you that you might not want to read the blog here in regards to the news story….I don’t have kids of my own, but I do have neices and nephews and this story made me just CRAZY.  I can’t imagine if I had kids of my own.

It was somewhere in South Carolina (I can’t remember the town) and the man’s name was Quinten (I think) and I also can’t remember what they said his last name was.  I also believe he was in his mid 20’s.

Anyway, the sad story that was reported was that on Halloween night 2 parents were taking their two boys trick-o-treating one of the boys is 12 and one is 9.  (Like ANY community in AMERICA on Halloween if you plan to give out candy to kids you turn your porch light on and if you plan to not give out candy you shut your light off…that’s how it works it’s just understood.)  So, the news is interviewing these two parents who are clearly, visibly beyond upset.  What had happened is their boys ran up ahead to the next house in line (with a light on the porch) and knocked on the door.  Next thing they know all they hear is bullets.  This guy CLAIMS that he thought he was being robbed.  He had an AK-47!!!!!  This bastard shot the 12 year old boy to death, the 9 year old is in ICU and the father in an attempt to save his kids got shot in the arm and had minor injuries.  This bastard shot over 97 bulletts according to the news.  I’m sorry but WHAT THE F**K is wrong with this world and some people!!!!!  It makes me TERRIFIED to think that some people out there are that crazy.  Seriously, what F**KING person “robbing your house” as he claims will knock on the door?????  It’s a bullshit excuse and this is EXACTLY why we should have a justice system that is “eye for an eye”…I would like to see this asshole be put in front of a closed door, have somebody behind it with an AK-47, and at some unexpected point shot him 97 times at point blank range…end of story, no trial, no jury, no judge…just do to him what he did to this poor family.  Now, the 9 year old boy has said to his mother that he never wants to celebrate Halloween again cause he does not want to die like his brother did.  How unbarebly sad is that.

I just had to share this with anybody that wanted to take the time to read.  This news story really got to me.  I can’t believe that there are people in this world that would do something like that….I just really am amazed that somebody could be that insane.

Ok, thanks for letting me get that off my chest…I know, quite an opposite blog from my last one!  I’ll have a happier blog soon.

Just for fun!!!

There are a lot of stupid people in this world, here are some short stories of such people.  Not sure if they are true, but they sure made me laugh when I got them over email.  I thought I’d share!

We had to have the garage door repaired. The Sears repairman told us that one of our problems was that we did not have a “large” enough motor on the opener. I thought for a minute and said that we had the largest one Sears made at that time, a 1/2 horsepower. He shook his head and said, “Lady, you need a 1/4 horsepower.” I responded that 1/2 was larger than 1/4. He said, “NO, it’s not.” Four is larger than two..”

We haven’t used Sears repair since.

My daughter and I went through the McDonald’s take-out window and I gave the clerk a $5 bill. Our total was $4.25, so I also handed her a quarter. She said, “you gave me too much money.” I said, “Yes I know, but this way you can just give me a dollar bill back.”  She sighed and went to get the manager who asked me to repeat my request. I did so, and he handed me back the quarter, and said “We’re sorry but they could not do that kind o f thing.” The clerk then proceeded to give me back $1 and 75 cents in change.

I live in a semi-rural area. We recently had a new neighbor call the local township administrative office to request the removal of the DEER CROSSING sign on our road.  The reason: “Too many deer are being hit by cars out here.

I was at the airport, checking in at the gate, when an airport employee asked, “Has anyone put anything in your baggage without your knowledge?” To which I replied, “If it was without my knowledge, how would I know?” He smiled knowingly and nodded,  “That’s why we ask.”

When my husband and I arrived at an automobile dealership to pick up our car, we were told the keys had been locked in it. We went to the service department and found a mechanic working feverishly to unlock the driver’s side door. As I watched from the passenger side, I instinctively tried the door handle and discovered that it was unlocked. “Hey,” I announced to the technician, “it’s open!” His reply, “I know. I already got that side.”

Rockstars Mental Challenge!

Hello Everybody…

Ok, so since I suggested the mental challenge of the “seasons blog” I figured it was only fair to immediately come to my blog-spot and write one.

The “assignment” is to talk about the Summer that’s just passed, the Fall upcoming, and What/Why is your favorite season of the year.  Then to go on and comment on other people’s “seasons blog.”  Here goes….

Well, all in all my Summer was not too exciting.  It started off pretty much like last summer did, I was working with NASCAR still, my wife and I decided it was time to adopt….a kitten that is, and we were looking forward to going to Florida for my cousin’s wedding in July, a friend’s wedding in August, and my sister-in-law’s wedding in September.

May 29th, we adopted a kitten who we named Salem after the city where we met, the city where we adopted him, and the city that my wife grew up in.  After knowing him now for just over 3 months, the name Salem really fits his personality…which I guess we sorta helped to create.  Oh and yup, I remember the date we adopted him without even looking at any paperwork.  So for the first 2 WEEKS of having him, he did not eat!!!  Not even a little bit, after countless trips to the feline hospital and countless attempts with different foods and liquids, the little guy finally got it and began to eat like a PONY!!!  Hahaha, now he is as normal as any 5 month old kitten should be and we’re happy to have him be part of our family.

In June I got some surprising and not so great news and that was that NASCAR no longer wanted to use my services as a camera operator on the DirecTV show I had been working on for the past year and a half.  While this really made me unhappy and obviously put us in a bit of a financial crunch, it was very nice to not have to hop on a plane every 4 days and spend so much time away from my wife, family, and friends.  The GREAT part of June was when I got the amazing opportunity to see The Boston Celtics win their 17th NBA Championship!!!  It was historic, it was unreal, and I am so happy to have been right there on the court of the TD BankNorth Garden to see it all unfold right in front of my eyes.  I had been basically a life-long Celtics fan, and in the 80’s and very early 90’s my father had seaons tickets with a friend of his…it was nice to see that kind of a great team again that we had here in the 80’s.

July seemed to have come and gone so quickly.  8 days were spent in Southern Florida, only 3 days spent working, and the rest were spent basically being “unemployed” to some extent.  I mean, I still am working in freelance TV, but the summer tends to be a bit slow in this area.  Florida was fun and relaxing, but when we got home the lack of $$$ became quite a scary problem.

In August, things began looking up, work picked up a bit and finally some much needed paychecks came in from prior work.  We were able to pay bills and at least have a little bit of money for everyday stuff.  My friend from college had her wedding in the middle of the month and I got to catch up with a lot of people I hadn’t seen in quite some time.  That was nice.

September is now here and the summer is about to officially end.  My sister-in-law is getting married this Sunday and I am so happy for her.  Her fiance’, (my new bro-in-law) is a great guy and we get along like brothers.  I am so happy to have him enter my family!  College sports have begun again and work is picking up a bit.  It seems that this month will be alright as far as income and the weather is getting to be the way I like it…speaking of that, it makes a nice segway to talk about the upcoming Fall season.

Before we know it, October will be here.  I am most looking forward to working at The Topsfiled Fair (check it out at www.topsfieldfair.org) on the maintnance crew once again.  I worked only once at the fair a few years back, with my brother and a few of his friends.  I go every year, but working there is a lot of fun.  Good money and the work actually is exciting.  It’s different work for me, so I enjoy it.  Basically, we do a lot of cleaning of the animal stalls at the agricultural part of the fair, we help with any random maintaining that needs to be done like if a booth needs lightbulbs changed, but mostly, we have fun.  Also, in October I have my birthday to look forward to on the 24th, then a week later it’ll be Halloween!!!  Salem, MA during the whole month is just a load of fun.  So much to do I’m sure I’ll be reporting on all of it on the forums and here on my blog.

My favorite season is the Fall…here in New England it’s second to none….the leaves all change colors and it’s beautiful.  The smells, the seasonal food (I know, I know), the chill in the air, the fact that it begins to get darker earlier (only good for a little bit, then that gets annoying…lol), people have pumpkins and scare crows on their porches, Thanksgiving is loads of fun too (more than just food), and sometimes we even get our first snow of the year around then….yeay (for a bit, then that gets annoying too…lol).  I’ll be sure to post some pics of Fall in New England for all of you Non-New Englander’s to see what it looks like, then maybe next year you’ll all want to take vacations here and we can have a Rockstar Meet & Greet…that would be fun!!!

All sorts of work offers, only one of me to go around!

In my line of work, sometimes you have no choice in turning down a really fun, well paying, and more importantly, very exciting day of work because of other commitments.  It’s what being a freelancer is all about basically.  You win some, you loose some, and being a psychic would’ve helped me A LOT this weekend.  I would’ve waited just a bit…lol, here’s my story.

Lemme give you a little incite (spelling?) into my world of work.  Sometimes people get confused about what I do or how I go about getting these jobs that I get.  First of all, the common mistake is that I take still pictures for a magazine or newspaper.  People don’t always understand that although they watch events on TV, there actually is a crew responsible for putting those events on TV…it’s funny really.  As many of you know, I used to work on NASCAR’s TV Crew for DirecTV until June when they decided to “go a different direction”, and locally I work on Celtics, Bruins, Red Sox, Patriots, a slew of college sports events, and a slew of random events.  What I do is considered freelancing.  It has benefits in the schedule where I don’t have to take any job I don’t want to, but the down side is, if I am not working I am not being paid.  It’s what 99% of sports television people do as the local stations do not have the means of employing that many people.  The larger network’s do the same thing really.

Anyway, what happens is I get a call from a crewing agent asking “Hey can you work on X date at X event?” and if I am free I’ll take the work…as any good freelancer will tell you, don’t turn down work…EVER.  The grey area there is that once you are well established then you can turn down work for personal things.  For me, it was literally 4 years before I ever attempted saying no.  This means missing a lot of family functions, weddings, parties, bbq’s, and so on.  This also means I have a great reputation as being hard working, dependable, reliable, and loyal.  Now that I am 11 plus years into my freelance career, I have made it my choice not to miss birthday parties (turned down a full weekend of work to be at my nephew’s 2nd birthday party), weddings, bbq’s, weekends away, and things like that.  That is the stuff you can’t get back no matter how much money you’ll make for missing it.  I also don’t miss holiday’s anymore.  Flew out once at 2pm on Christmas Day with the New England Patriots….although that job was a great one, leaving my wife and family on Christmas Day was not so fun.  The sacraficies I’ve made have gotten me to a good point in my career though, so I don’t regret them, but I’ve earned my stripes.

The problem with freelance work comes in when there are busier days in the area.  For example, if there are a few college games, a Celtics game, and maybe a Providence Bruins’ game all going on the same day (which happens a lot in the fall) then I may get 3 calls for the same day.  The other scenario that happens is if there are more than one network covering a game.  If ESPN is going to come in to cover the Celtics, there are still the local home and away team’s coverage that happens.  In that instance, ESPN may call me to work a Celtics game that I am already working for Comcast Sports New England (confused yet?…lol).

I can only be in so many places at once…lol.  There are limited times when a “double dip” will actually work out, typically because our days are 10 plus hours.  I am the type of person that is committed and when I say I’ll work, then I’ll work.  With that in mind, there’s also an unwritten rule in the freelance community where if you get a multiple day job offered then you take it even if you’re working on a one day job and you generally can get yourself replaced.  There is ALWAYS somebody looking to work somewhere.  For example, I was scheduled once to work at a Boston University hockey game, but got called to do an auto race in California that was a 7 day job, with a lot more pay.  Obviously, I had to get rid of 1 day to work 7, it’s a no brainer.

Well, this summer has been slow with work until this upcoming weekend.  It kills me the amount of work I’ve now been offered for this weekend.  If I could spread out the days across the month I wouldn’t have time to sleep.

My original plans for the upcoming weekend were to go with my wife and parents to see Neil Diamond in Fenway Park.  Well, with work being slow I got an offer to work a dirtbike race for SPEED Channel on Friday, Saturday, & Sunday of this weekend.  I talked about it with my wife and decided it was more important to take the work and we’d see if her mother wanted to go to the show or something.  (One of those sacrafices, for some more money)  We ended up letting my parents sell the tickets to their friends, so we actually got our money back too, that was a nice surprise.  Anyway, I was happy I had 3 days of work at a very good rate of pay and I’d be at a dirtbike race which would be exciting.  Then I get a call saying “Oh, we only need you on the Saturday & Sunday” ok, no problems except now I’m loosing a day of pay….the same day I get a call asking if I could work the Patriots pre-season game on the Friday….sweet, my day of pay is back and now I’ll be working again that Friday.  Later that night I get a call saying…”Oh yeah, you’re back on for Friday and this dirtbike race”  Umm…problem, now I’ve gutta get out of the Pats gig and go back to my original commitment (dizzy yet).  No biggie on getting out of the Pats game so that was nice and now I’m back on the dirtbike race.  Soooo, then a few days later I got another call (by another network) to cover the Pats game, but obviously had to turn it down.  THEN I got called to cover a tennis tournament at Yale University (The Pilot Pen)…also 3 days I had to turn down…now I’m getting aggrivated at all of these calls for the SAME DAYS!!!!  Spread out the work people….lol.  Let’s see, what else for this weekend….oh yeah, ANOTHER call for the Pats (GRRRR) turned down.  So far that’s 3 shows for the Patriots, 1 Tennis tournament (4 jobs totaling 6 work days so far).  Then today I thought I might hang myself.  I got a call from an old friend who works a lot of concerts and he said “I’ve gut 2 jobs I need help on”  1.  5 days of work at the Nassau Colloseium for a Disney Show and 2.  Neild Diamond in Fenway (that comes in the middle of the NY show but they were willing to fly me back and forth).  The pay for the Neil Diamond job was outrageous….$550.00 for the first 10 hours, plus overtime after that was done!!!  I didn’t even ask about the NY pay cause I couldn’t do it anyway.

So, with the 6 work days originally turned down plus the 5 NY days plus the 1 Neil Diamond show that is a total of 12 days of work (not really) that I essentially had to turn down cause it was all in the same weekend…..grrrr….this is the part of my job I don’t like, if those days were all spread throughout August it would’ve been a really nice month!

OK….so, that’s that….had to vent, and wanted to share.

Hello People of Buddyslimville!!!

Nothing really important to talk about tonight.  Just felt like writing a blog as it’s been a bit since I’ve done one.  I am watching Gymnastics on the Olympics now with my wife.  We just saw the syncronized diving and USA came in 4th…too bad, I thought they were good.  China got the Gold on that one and I must say, I’d hate to be a judge cause they all looked like they were good divers to me.  I would never be able to tell what’s an 9.5 and what’s an 8 and why the difference.

The gymnastics competetors look so young!  Maybe I am just old!  hahahaha.  Anyway, I like watching really random things on the Olympics cause you don’t see some things all that often.  Today I watched Women’s Archery (never saw that before) and it was awesome!  Yesterday I saw Handball (also never saw that) and it too was awesome!  Later we watched what I guess was called “Men’s Trap” which was basically like skeet shooting where these guys had a shotgun and were shooting at a launched red disk thing.  Also never saw it on tv before but was really awesome.

I did watch some of the basketball game and some soccer, but I get to see that stuff every day so there’s not much of a big deal in that one to me.  I think for me, the Olympics are about the really random stuff that you don’t see every day, that’s what makes it special.

 Ok, that is all….g’nite!

WANNA BE A ROCKSTAR!!!???!!!

Come on out and be a ROCKSTAR!!!  It’s easy, just email me on here, or come to the weight loss forum and check out our latest page (we’ll be at Week 19 on Sunday).

There are a lot of weight loss teams here on the Buddy Slim pages, but we are a fun group.  What we are and what we do is simple.  Help, motivate, and gain friendships.  I have been a part of Buddyslim since April 1st, and have been a Rockstar since maybe the second week in April.  We have a few spots open on the team again and would love any and all interested people.

If you want some motivation to loose weight, can weigh in and post results to our team leader on or by Saturday sometime, and want to make some new and interesting friends, them come on and check it out.

Some topics of the past include “What concerts have you been to”  “Post a bio about yourself” “Post a Rockstar style fiction bio about yourself” “Post some before/after pics” and so on…we carry on conversations on our message board daily and have become a big part of each other’s lives.

It’s fun and helps get through those tough times you run into in your weight loss journey.  Don’t do it alone when there are so many willing friends who are looking to help you.

Not myself this week…

For those of you here that have gotten to know me well over the past few months, you know I haven’t been myself this week.  Times are still tough with money and it’s really taking it’s toll on me.  I am beginning to get more work but with freelance, that pays in about 30 days.  Anyway, I am STILL waiting on some checks to come in from last month and with those not being in, it is literally driving me insane.  I am looking to do all sorts of work, and luckilly, have been getting a good deal of it, but July was slow and now that’s hurting me.

I will hopefully get back on track very very soon and be my typically cheery self, but until then…I’ll do my best for my friends and team mates here on buddyslim.

My Trip to Florida…

Well I know it’s been a bit since I’ve blogged…I finally feel I’m fully back in the swing of things from my trip to Florida.  Those of you on my Rockstar team know about my accident but for those of you who are not on the Rockstar team…that part of this story won’t be booring…LOL!

So, my wife and I (and my entire family) went to West Palm Beach, FL last week for my cousin’s wedding.  Actually the wedding was like 15 min. North in Palm Beach Gardens.  It was all very nice and it was really nice to see my entire family, cousins from Florida, aunts uncles, my sister who lives in Denver…it was all nice.  However, for some reason, whenver my family does ANYTHING it seems there are “stories” and lots of them.

Here is a rundown of how my trip went.

Thursday, landed no problems maybe a little bit early.  Head off to the car rental place to pick up the economy sized car I reserved.  Of course, no economy sized left, but they’ll put me into an SUV for no extra charge.  Well, Renee’ and I get all of our bags in the SUV (crappy little one at that) and I start it up.  Find out there’s a “CHECK ENGINE SOON” light on the dash.  Take all the bags out and go back in.  I tell the rental agent there is no way I’ll take a car with warning lights on.  They give me a mini-van instead.  Now I feel old for 2 reasons, 1.  when they said they had a mini-van I was ok with it, but more importantly 2. when I saw it my reacation was “Oh, that’s nice”…LOL.  Get in the mini-van and there’s a “Low Washer Fluid” light on…this one I say oh well and go on about my day.  My wife and I get to the hotel and start taking our bags out of the car when I say “Honey, where’s the camera?”…..”OH CRAP…it’s in the 1st rental CAR!”  As the valet from the hotel comes to get our bags from us we throw them in the car and literally Batman & Robin style jump back in and take off (didn’t say anything to him…he just saw us run, I can’t imagine what he must have been thinking).  Make the 20 minute drive to the car rental place in just under 9 minutes and luckilly get our camera back.  That was about it drama wise for Thursday.  Then we got to relax and finally made it to the hotel ok.

Friday, the day goes pretty well…we hung out at the pool pretty much all morning, went to my aunts house for a bit and saw more family.  At night it was the rehersal dinner so we were all invited (even though we weren’t in the wedding…which was nice).  The little place we went to for that was not ready…they though we were comming the following week!  The problem was there were 55 of us and the place maybe sat 60 in total.  Luckilly we got out of it pretty trouble free…they made due as best they could with some exceptions.

Saturday, The wedding was great…we didn’t do too much but relax and do a little shopping during the day.  It was a late wedding so we wanted to be able to stay up late.  What we didn’t realize is just how late we’d end up staying out of our hotel room for.  When we got back to the hotel there were about 10 firetrucks (really), 15 cop cars, an a mixture of Ambulances and EMT trucks…the phone room in the basement of the hotel had caught on fire somehow and we were kept out of the building until 3:30AM!!!  Nobody was hurt and apparantley nothing got too damaged so that was good.

Sunday, was preety trouble free…unless you count in the 3:30am thing being Sunday…lol.  My aunt and uncle had a lot of out of town family over to their house.  I played Nintendo Wii for the first time (well I had seen it in Best Buy before), but we pretty much went swimming for a bit and then played Wii all day long…oh yeah, along with eating eating and eating when that was done.  Then we ate some more (hence my 2 pound gain this week).  I knew I was going to be bad but hey, it’s a choice I accepted and I have been very good for a very long time.  I also have accepted the work I need to do now that I am back.

Monday, went to return my nephew’s tux (he was the ring bearer…pics to follow).  Got rearended in the mini-van (also pics to follow).  Got glass in my hands from the window being shattered and my attempt to pick up luggage I shouldn’t have.  Got a $91.00 citation for not having an insurance card.  Problem is, in Massachusetts we do not have insurance cards for auto insurance.  The cop was being a dink is what that boiled down to, but I was able to appeal it successfully.

Tuesday & Wednesday both went by drama free…the nice part of taking a vacation like that is there is not much you have to do…the bad part about taking a vacation like that is there is not much TO DO so you get bored easily.

It was nice to be away for a bit, but it was also nice to finally get home.  Now that I am back home and back to my regular schedule I am looking forward to getting to walk every day.  Since we’ve been home I have gotten back on track of healthy eating and a regular schedule of eating which is almost more important.  Now I am happy to be back here and blogging again.

More later and look out for those pics…once I have them up on photobucket I’ll have them up here.
